DETT 607 Instructional Design & Course Development
An instructional designer plays a significant role in the process of learning, especially in distance education. For example, when I open my online classroom, I feel lost in the first week of any class until I figure out the design and the structure of my course. Once I have a system in my head and know where everything is, I start learning week-by-week. Very often I am terrified the first week because it feels like absolute chaos, and I cannot absorb all of it in one semester. However, when I know that the instructional designer organized it for me in a step-by-step process, I realize that I will be able to absorb it all at the end. Therefore, the role of an instructional designer is to work with an instructor, unless an instructor plays a function of a designer himself/herself, so that the classroom material is presented in an organized manner. If the instructions are not organized, then the learning process does not have a system and reduces retention.

“The term instructional design can be defined as a systematic method for analyzing, designing, developing and managing the instructional process efficiently; based on the knowledge and experiences of learning and instructional theories so that it will improve the quality of instruction and ensure effective and retentive learning” (Baturay, 2008, p. 472).
